Code Foils

Code Foils is an Australian hydrofoil manufacturer established in 2022. Behind the brand are four experienced foilers: Marcus and Ben Tardrew, Daniel Juengling, and James Casey. All four are active competitive foilers themselves, which is reflected in the design and development of their products.
Before founding Code Foils, the team members accumulated years of experience in the industry from various angles: some served as team riders for other brands, while others worked as salespeople in surf and foiling shops. This gave them practical insight into what gear works and what doesn't – and, above all, what lasts and what breaks. This experience has directly translated into product design, which is why Code foils are exceptionally robust. Warranty claims are rare.
Competitive success speaks for itself
Code Foils' 860R won the Molokai 2 Oahu race in 2023 – the most prestigious downwind foiling competition. The 770R from the same season won the Paddle Imua. The products have therefore been tested in the world's toughest conditions, not just in the manufacturer's own tests.
One brand for multiple disciplines
Code Foils' product range can be used to set up equipment for prone, wing, SUP, downwind, and dock start foiling. A recurring comment on foiling forums is that many have tried several brands – Sabfoil, Armstrong, GoFoil, Unifoil – before settling on Code. If you want one system that covers multiple disciplines, this is a choice worth considering.
Rigid construction and meticulous details
Code Foils' foils and masts are constructed from high modulus carbon fiber. The Plus mast is approximately 40% stiffer in torsion and 60% stiffer in bending than the original High Modulus mast. In practice, this means that pumping and turns are transmitted directly to the foil without excessive flex.
The fuselage connection system is tight and free of play, which makes the structure stable and predictable during riding. The structural solutions are not accidental: as the founders have witnessed for years which components withstand heavy use and which do not, there are no shortcuts in design where other brands often save costs.
One practical advantage, immediately noticeable upon first assembly: all screws in the Code system are tightened with the same T30 Torx tool and from the same side. With some other brands, different sized tools are needed, and some screws are tightened from the top, others from the bottom. The Code system makes assembling and disassembling the foil quicker and simpler – less hassle before and after your session.
Suitable for all skill levels
The larger S-series foils – 1300S, 1540S, and 1725S – are specifically designed for beginners and heavier foilers. They offer early and abundant lift, a stable ride, and forgiving behavior, making foiling easy to learn on them. The 1540S and 1725S, in particular, are excellent for dock start practice, as they get onto the foil at slower speeds and provide good glide for their size.
Smaller S-series foils and the R-series require more active pumping and are better suited for intermediate and advanced levels. In return, they offer a stable and predictable ride throughout the speed range, meaning the equipment grows with your skills – there's no need to switch immediately as your level improves.
Product range at a glance
- S-series – A versatile foil that works for most disciplines. Available in nine sizes (500–1725 cm²). Aspect ratio (AR) 9.5, easy lift, and good glide.
- R-series – Designed for downwind foiling. High aspect ratio (AR 13.0), long glide, efficient pumping.
- X-series – For wave foiling. Lower aspect ratio (AR 8.2), more agile and faster response.
All series are available in multiple sizes depending on weight and skill level.
Mast options for different needs
Code Foils' mast selection is built around three carbon fiber mast options: the original High Modulus mast once set the benchmark for mast stiffness, the Plus mast takes this even further with Ultra High Modulus carbon fiber, and the Code Foils x Foil Drive Integrated mast is designed for Foil Drive systems.
Alongside these, Code has introduced a new aluminum mast – their first aluminum mast. It does not replace the carbon fiber masts but offers a more affordable way for beginners or those new to foiling to get into the Code system without significantly compromising stiffness or fit. The mast is designed with the same profile as the carbon fiber versions and works seamlessly with all Code wings and fuselages. Available in 75 cm and 80 cm lengths.
This also means that a foiler can start with an aluminum mast and upgrade to a carbon fiber version later without having to change the rest of their equipment.
Foil Drive compatibility
Code Foils has collaborated with Foil Drive and produces a separate integrated mast for Foil Drive systems. If you use or are considering Foil Drive, this is one of the more compatible options on the market.
Active Community
Code Foils has an active Facebook group called "Code Foil Riders", where foilers from around the world share experiences, setup tips, and ask for advice. The Code Foils team also participates in discussions. The group is a convenient place to find more information on how different sizes and combinations perform in practice – especially if you're wondering which setup would be best for you.
Materials and finish
The foils and carbon fiber masts are made of 100% carbon fiber, a large part of which is high modulus quality. Protective cases, bolts, and necessary tools are included with the delivery.
