What is foiling?

A new generation of water-based bonding

Foil or hydrofoil , or in Finnish, hydrofoil. Hydrofoils have been around for a long time on boats, but they have been used on surfboards for a relatively short time. In recent years, development has been rapid and taking off has become easier and easier. Foiling has revolutionized the way we move on the water. A hydrofoil board lifts the enthusiast above the surface, making the movement almost silent and incredibly light. The feeling is reminiscent of flying – with just a mast and a wing, you glide over the water in a way that no other sport can.

Foiling is not just one way to do it, but a whole range of sports, each of which offers a unique experience.

Wing foil - the sport that brought foiling within everyone's reach

Wingfoiling is foiling with the power of a hand-held wing. It combines the best aspects of sailing, kiteboarding and foiling, offering a light, free feeling and a fast-paced experience. Wingfoiling has been growing rapidly in recent years. It makes foiling relatively easy and really fun! Read more about wingfoiling...

Dock start – pumping to move

In a dock start, you take off from the dock and jump onto the foil, then continue the movement by pumping. It is a simple, technical and extremely addictive sport.

Dock start is perfect for Finnish conditions. We have thousands of lakes and even more cottage docks to launch from – you don't need a boat or sail, just a foil and a little space.

SUP foil and downwind foil – with the waves and wind

SUP foil combines stand-up paddle boarding and foiling. You take off by paddling. If you foil far from the shore with a SUP foil board, the sport is called downwind foiling. When the waves and wind carry you forward, you can travel dozens of kilometers while foiling. Downwind foiling does not require open water. Sufficient waves are created even on a lake a few kilometers wide if the wind blows more than 10 meters per second.

Wake foil – the force of the boat's wake

Wake foiling makes water skiing even more fun. The wake behind the boat provides the perfect launch, and the foil continues to move forward at low speed. It works both on a cottage lake with a small motorboat and in larger waves behind a water ski boat.

Prone foil – the most surfing-like experience

Prone foiling is the closest thing to traditional surfing. You start paddling on your stomach and stand up as the foil rises to the surface. It brings the surfing feel to small waves where a regular surfboard wouldn't work.

Why is foiling addictive?

Foiling is a combination of balance, technique and the forces of nature. Each form of the sport offers a new challenge and a new way to enjoy being on the water. In Finland, the sport is especially easy to start, as there are plenty of bodies of water everywhere, and the cottage pier can be your own starting point. Every hour spent on the water builds your skills as a foiler. Development can sometimes be slow, but successes are truly rewarding.

At the Foiling Shop you will find everything you need for different forms of foiling, from dock starts to downwind foiling and everything in between.
